The Haifa.ItChildren of the Sun’ is the result of a three months encounter with Gorky energetic and extreme text. Instead of trying to find reliable ways of speaking this old text we set ourselves free from the original words and dived inside the different images, movements, ideologies, and relationships imbedded in Gorky proposition. Using the principles of the Active analysis, Etudes and writing pages and pages of inner monologues – we tried to improvise ourselves inside the material seeking the intersection between the biography and the fiction. and by using real live video from the street just outside of the theatre as our background we try to find a twilight zone between Here and now / There and then & / There and now – this fragile balance between reality and theatre. Each show is by default different – not just in a general energetic kind of way but inherently different. The show composition and text are improvised – and the performers have the freedom to act in relation to the outside world. It is Gorky play. The structure is the same every show, but the way is ever-changing.

Maxim Gorky wrote the original play while being imprisoned during the abortive Russian Revolution of 1905. At this moment a big question echoed – How do we continue from here? Children of the sun is a big bang of questions: When everything outside falling apart – what is the role of the individual in the society? What is the role of art in moments of crisis? And what about science? Progress? Theater?

Gorky draw a group of intellectuals which tries their best finding a meaning to their life but doing so they distant themselves further and further from their amidite environment. From their own backyard. A-bit like a City-Theatre.

In their crumbling rent mention they turn to science, art and love only to realize too late that their ideas do not rhyme with the harsh reality.

The Plot

the scientist Protassov, is working madly on a visionary idea: the potential of mankind to overcome its biological limits to found a new society. He is oblivious to everyone around him and cuts himself off from the rumours of revolt and cholera engulfing the city. He loses himself in experiments and talks with the artist Wagin, who is trying to court his wife, and the veterinarian Chepurnoy, who asks for his sister’s hand in marriage but is repeatedly turned down.

Feverishly, they discuss great ideals and the potential of mankind while leaving a trail of destruction in their wake. A lack of sympathy and social conscience leads to an escalation in the situation both within and beyond the estate walls.
